Greta Van Susteren vs. Ana Marie Cox: Ideological Strangers on a Train?

POSTED BY: Katie Halper

Over the past few weeks, we've explored the sibling rivalry between television/radio correspondents and bloggers. But what better way to end this feature than with an inspiring story which shows us how blogger-correspondent collaboration can literally save lives…

It seemed like any other Amtrak train on any other crisp April night. But it very much was not. Greta Von Susteren and her husband were aboard the DC-NY Amtrak train, when, all of a sudden, Von Susteren's husband, John Coale, heard a frightening sound, and nudged his wife to attention. Greta recognized the sound and knew it was one thing and one thing only: a food allergy attack. Herself a food allergic individual, Greta knew what she needed to do. Armed with a bendaryl tablet, Von Susteren ran to the rescue of the would-be victim and bravely administered the antihistamine.

The saved allergy-sufferer recalls the "indescribably terrifying" attack and the soothing words of her savior. "She was like 'I think I know what is happening to you. Don't worry about it. We're going to get you a Benadryl'." Though she'll never know for sure, the Benadryl recipient suspects that without the interVontion, "It would have been a thousand times worse." Greta claims, "I didn't do anything heroic. I did what anyone would have done." Maybe anyone would have done this.

But the person Von Susteren saved wasn't just anyone. She was none other than "far-left person" Ana Marie Cox.

The Fox News correspondent's actions were so brave Bill O'Reilly knighted Von Susteren a "Patriot" and stated that "Ironically, Miss Cox, a far-left person, now may owe her life to the Fox News Channel." Destiny (or bladder control) intervened once again, a month later when the two ran into each other, a month later, in the ladies room at White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Amidst the sound of hand blow dryers and flushing toilets, Cox uttered the following words: "Thank you for saving my life."

These women certainly have their differences (see chart below). But they were able to put them aside.

You Can Thank Rupert Murdoch for Al Franken's Win

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Talking Points Memo takes a look at Fox News' reaction to their mortal enemy Al Franken being elected to the senate…

Sen.-elect Al Franken's (D-MN) long-awaited victory in the 2008 Minnesota Senate race seems to have caused quite a lot of stress in the Murdoch-owned press.

Remember, this is the same corporation that sued him for his Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them book back in 2003, with the unintended consequence of giving him tons of free publicity to sell books — and elevating him into being a hero of liberal activists, without which he might never have become a politician!

I hadn't even considered that! So, Bill O'Reilly, Rupert Murdoch and Fox News are in some very real sense — especially considering how small a margin the final tally was — directly responsible for Al Franken's new job opportunity?

That almost makes having Al Franken as a U.S. senator worth it.

LAST COMMENT:

See Dennis, you under-appreciate how hard the Fox folks work at looking like idiots just to make Al look good. It's a thankless job.

Let's All Pretend to Care About Science for a Minute

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Hey, look who all of a sudden is very concerned about the possibility of the White House suppressing important scientific information…

Aw, Fox News. You're so cute. It's almost like you're a real news station.

Chris Mooney at The Intersection lays out the reality of the situation — and why this isn't the same thing as the last administration's anti-science agenda — better than I ever could…

The "war on science" argument that I made in my 2005 book crucially hinged on matters of scientific substance. Not only was the Bush administration interfering with science conducted at federal agencies, but moreover, the agency scientists were right, and the administration was wrong–or at least, the agency scientists had strong arguments that should have been taken very seriously.

That is not remotely what we have in the present case… [C]onservatives thought they had a real scandal on their hands. Problem is, they didn't pick a winner–Carlin's report is scientific hogwash. As I write: "Climate researcher Gavin Schmidt of NASA… has written a very devastating analysis of the claims made in Carlin's paper, calling it 'a ragbag collection of un-peer reviewed web pages, an unhealthy dose of sunstroke, a dash of astrology and more cherries than you can poke a cocktail stick at.' "

I'd recommend reading the whole thing. Before Obama's henchmen have this whole thing scrubbed from the Internet.

Update: For the record, I'm not in favor of any actual science being suppressed for political reasons. And if it turns out that's what the EPA was doing, I'll be very upset. But I have strong suspicions that this "suppressed" scientific report by an EPA economist is less legitimate skepticism and more Ben Stein/Pat Buchanan skepticism.

TPM has more.

LAST COMMENT:

Okay, I take it all back. Dude is a quack. In his introduction, he question’s EPA’s analysis because it lacks the last three years data. But on page 36 of the report he sites a 1979 study.

Fox News Reports on That Cheating Democrat Mark Sanford

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Make a mistake one time, no big deal. Ten times, we have to maybe think about double-checking our work before we send it out. A million times, okay, somebody needs to take a nap.

But a million billion times?!* That can't be a mistake

In Fox's defense, they don't get a lot of practice reporting unfavorable stories about Republicans.

It's a force of habit.

* Don't quote me on that number. It might be slightly off.

LAST COMMENT:

I never say anything that I am ashamed to put my name to and I am not going to start now.I fit every profile of what a republican is.I am educated, retired military,I own and carry guns for personal protection,my wife is also retired military,we live in a comfortably middle classed neighborhood,we own our home and both drive new cars. Why then am I not a republican?BecauseI have both compassion and common sense.Any news program that is biased either way does service to no one.It is no different than communist state run news agencies.PS.socialized health care is not the path to socialism,it is the blood letting of all the vampires that make healthcare unobtainable,LOVE TO ALL,BLESSTHEGAYS&LESBIANS WITHALL THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS&ENJOY THIS RANT FROM A PISTOL PACKING LIBERAL,GOOD-DAY

Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly Know Their Audience

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

It's nice to see that Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly have finally come to terms with the intellectual level of the average Fox viewer.

And, wow, does Bill O'Reilly know his way around a timely Village People zinger.

Fox News Gets Slightly Less Childish

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Watching this video from Fox and Friends, you might be a little confused to see the three chosen pundits speaking with something that appears to be restraint and doing something that looks like it might be thinking before they open their mouths.

But, don't worry; you're not going crazy. These aren't real people. They're kids…

I love the condescending tone with which Steve Doocy talks to these small people, when the three of them are clearly his intellectual betters and the one with the tie will probably have his job in a year or two (and probably own the GOP in five).

By the way, if you think you recognize that mini-Alex P. Keaton, it's probably because you do.

Kos & Bill-O: Hateful Rivalry or Homoerotic Obsession?

POSTED BY: Katie Halper

The newspaper is dying, slowly but surely. But who is responsible for the murder? Is it the scrappy blogosphere? Or the saccharin world of TV/radio journalism? Is this a blogger-correspondent conspiracy? Over the next few days, I'll be investigating the relationship between bloggers and TV/radio correspondents to reveal to you a complex web of intrigue and passion.

Markos Moulitsas
Daily Kos
Bill O'Reilly
The O'Reilly Factor
Sign Libra Virgo
Interests Spending time with his two kids, drum circles, composting, burning flags, redistributing wealth Showers, long phone conversations with colleagues
Secret Talent Classical pianist / composer Writing literary erotica, loofah / falafel massages
Type Short, dark and handsome Tall, pale and blotchy
Favorite Food Pirates Booty (not cheetos!), vegan souvlaki pupusas, "bloggered eggs" (frozen embryos with honey dijon mustard) Thai cuisine, falafels, soul food, anything at Sylvia's

.

How they feel about each other

Bill O'Reilly: O'Reilly is a kindergarten style flirt who teases the people he like-likes. But there is nothing innocent about O'Reilly's obsession with Markos.  Markos's legs must be tired because he's been running around O'Reilly's mind for years now. Billo cannot stop talking about Markos, and he even compares Markos to his other major crush, David Duke, who has always been O'Reilly's knight in cotton white armor.

Markos Moulitsas:  Markos once confessed to fellow object-of-O'Reilly's-Obsession, Keith Olberman, that he used to feel jealous and insecure about O'Reilly's crush on Keith: "I looked on as O‘Reilly attacked you for years and turned you into this ratings powerhouse on MSNBC, so I thought, I could use a little bit of O‘Reilly love. I‘m glad that he‘s actually delivered some of that." But after all the attention and love, Markos can't help but realize that he drives Bill crazy and can get him hot and bothered like no one else.

.

How they really feel about each other

Bill O'Reilly: O'Reilly may be straight or, when it comes to gay marriage, bi-curious.  (He used to say he "couldn't care less about gay marriage" but now sees it as a gateway marriage to drugs, abortion, and the revocation of the Patriot Act, and inter-species matrimony.) But he certainly seems to have a thing for Markos Moulitsas.

Markos Moulitsas: Markos is flattered by all the attention, but it is unrequited.  Sorry, Bill, but he's just not that into you.

Jon Stewart on Cable News's 3-Way Race to the Bottom

POSTED BY: Matt Tobey

Did you know that in oppressed nations, they only have one news source, and it only reports unreliable bullshit? That's what's great about the US. We get to choose from three news channels that report three different kinds of unreliable bullshit. So whether it's knee-jerk xenophobic jingoism, knee-jerk pseudo-liberalism or knee-jerk Twittering, there's something for everyone.

The Daily Show airs Monday through Thursday at 11pm / 10c.

LAST COMMENT:

Are you saying The Daily Show reports unreliable BS? Can you give an example?
