Ralph Nader to Speak Before Half-Dozens Near GOP Convention

POSTED BY: Dennis DiClaudio

Even as we speak, Ralph Nader is counting out the change he'll be needing to purchase a round-trip ticket to Minneapolis for the GOP convention he won't be attending…

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader plans a rally in Minneapolis on the final day of the Republican National Convention.

Nader's campaign says the rally will be a call to action for opening the presidential debates to candidates like him.

I think this should be a really effective strategy for Nader. Especially when the media get a load of the heavy hitters he's got lined up to face down the RNC guests.

Like Tito, the guy who runs the sandwich truck over on Marquette Ave. He's got some harsh words to say about how "totally not fair" the media are treating candidates like him and his homeboy Nader.

Still no word on whether or not Homeless Jimmy who lives out behind the Nicollet Mall Target will be delivering his stirring "I Have a Hammer in My Foot" speech.

  1. Dennis,
First of all, no one will be able to get near the Mpls/St. Paul airport during the RNC, so forget the comment about the round trip ticket.
Our intent is to saturate the media and hand out over 50,000 flyers to advertise the Nader/Gonzalez rally at Orchestra Hall on Sept 4th, so I believe we'll get more than dozens showing up.
Know also that hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised by the Nader/Gonzalez campaign weekly by contributions made from public donations instead of feeding from the same corporate trough as the Repulicrats do.
I do hope Tito, a working class person and all homeless people show up since we obviously aren't on a sustainable path economically, environmentally or democratically in this country. Maybe when the empire crashes, Dennis can learn a new trade like peddling sandwiches rather than insulting patriots who have been fighting for justice for over four decades.

  2. This 1984 day has fucked everything up. I don't need anyone to paint me a damned picture of an author rubbing one out. CubbyChaser is blue, has warts, and is anatomically incorrect.

  3. If Nader is coming to Minneapolis to speak, at least we'll have an opportunity to hear some truth from a presidential candidate as a result of the RNC coming. Probably we'll even get to hear some real and sustainable solutions to what is clearly ailing our nation.

If only Bush and Gore hadn't stolen the election from Nader back in 2000… We would have avoided the quagmire in Iraq, we would have invested in our infrastructure (perhaps avoiding things like the 35W bridge collapse, the failing levees at New Orleans), creating homegrown jobs and sustainable energy policy. We might even have instituted a liveable minimum wage by now.

    Isn't it about time?

  6. It is amazing how many people are going to vote for an independent candidate this year. The people are tired of the two-party juggernaut. I am working on a campaign where we have knocked on over 4,000 doors and it is clear that people are not going to put up with the same old rhetoric of the Democrats and the Republicans this year.

It is easy to ignore all of those people who want something better for the government, after all, the public media has been doing it for years. However, for those of us who know and support the work of Ralph Nader, his message has been heard and listened to. His contribution towards making the system better is significant. Maybe if DiClaudio read the book called "Crashing the Party" by Ralph Nader, he would realize that this is our last chance to try to have real ballot access in all 50 states. The system is locking out the voice of the American people and Ralph Nader is fighting to let us be heard. There is nothing funny about that. We are fighting to keep our democracy alive.

I know. I wasn't expecting the Democrats or Republicans to actually show up for their conventions either.

So, you're combatting the electoral college? Because otherwise, your votes will disappear. Having just finished explaining this to the Green Party people, I'll be brief: only the votes cast for the candidate who wins the majority of a state are counted. Unless Nader gets 50.1% of the vote in your state, you're better off staying home… and working on an ammendment to get rid of the electoral college.

I believe Nader is also in favour of eliminating this outmoded, undemocratic system — which disenfranchises up to 49.9% of voters in any particular state– and going parliamentary, like many other democratic nations in the world who seem to do pretty well for themselves and their citizens, e.g., Norway, Sweden, Germany, Canada, etc.

If minority voices aren't shut out of the electoral process and thereby public office, we'd start seeing the things a lot of Americans say they want– health care coverage for all, higher wages, etc– instead of the middle-finger, which is the only thing the Democrats and Republicans give us come the day after elections.

fairvote dot org is a good place to start learning about alternatives.

  10. Thanks, beclouded, for the publicity. It's just what we need.
Quoting Lou Dobbs (no favorite of mine), "Doesn't anybody derserve a government that works?"
Well, you'll never get it from either major party, with Congress appropriating millions for the duopolies to crown their candidate, and then doing everything they can, together with their media mouthpieces, to prevent the voters from hearing what a REAL LEADER devoted to public service can offer. If they knew, they would have plenty to fear at the polls.
Yes, the homeless, those without adequate affordable health care, those who depend on understocked foodshelves to get the nutritious food they can't get there and those who are horrified at the idea that a country which attacks another one can call itself civilized, let alone democratic (when our electoral system is modeled after those of Iran and Russia) are especially welcome.
